Cytogenetics laboratory – Tel: +27 021 4044509

Chromosome studies are time consuming due to the cell culture, cell harvesting and microscopic analysis which has to take place.

In general blood samples take about 7 to 10 days for a result but the majority of cases, especially positive trisomies such as Down syndrome, will be ready in 3 days.

Cordocentesis samples generally take the same time as a venous blood sample but due to the usually urgent reason for taking a cord sample these will be reported on from 3 to 5 days if at all possible.

Amniotic fluid samples have a longer culture time, usually between 8 and 14 days. This can vary greatly depending on the fluid volume taken and the number of viable cells collected. Results can be available from 10 to 20 days after collection.

Please be assured that the laboratory will send out the result as soon as it is available.

Urgent, abnormal results are given telephonically.

Should you require patients (or parents) to have genetic counselling as a result of an abnormal chromosome result please phone: 021-406 6373
