Masters Students

Monica Araujo

I completed my undergraduate BSc in Biomedical Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2015, majoring in Genetics and Developmental Biology and Human Physiology. I then went on to receive a BHSc Honours in Human Genetics from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2016. For my Honours research project, under the supervision of Dr Zané Lombard and Dr Thandiswa Ngcungcu, I investigated population diversity of the obesity-risk locus TRPM7 in the Birth-To-Twenty cohort from Soweto, South Africa.

I have now made the move to the University of Cape Town where I am completing a MSc (Med) in Genetic Counselling. For my Masters dissertation, I will be investigating the ‘Perspectives and Experiences of Individuals Undergoing Predictive Testing for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) Syndrome in the Western Cape Province of South Africa’ under the supervision of Nakita Laing and Mardelle Schoeman. I am also working with Retina South Africa in conjunction with UCT.
